Release Date:    15 December 2008 (USA)

Genre:                   Documentary

Run Time:             1 hr 30 mins

Synopsis:

Chronicles the history of swordplay from its shadowed and legendary past to today. Includes interviews and demos with the world’s leading sword masters, Hollywood stars, academics, practitioners, private collectors and sword-smiths. The documentary delves deep, systematically exploring the Medieval and Renaissance blade, a profound and beautiful object handcrafted by master artisans of old. An object of great complexity, yet one with a singular use in mind–it is designed to kill. The truth of the sword has been shrouded in antiquity, and the Renaissance martial arts that brought it to being are long forgotten. The ancient practitioners lent us all they knew through their manuscripts. As gunslingers of the Renaissance they were western heroes with swords, and they lived and died by them.

Download The End of America

Release Date:       3 December 2008 (USA)

Genre:                    Documentary

Run Time:             1 hr 15 mins

Synopsis:
Naomi Wolf’s book, “The End of America,” became a word-of-mouth phenomenon from publisher Chelsea Green. The book was on the New York Times Best Seller list for more than five months. When some enterprising students videotaped Naomi’s lecture tour in support of “The End of America” and posted it on YouTube, more than a half-million people viewed and passed the video around, creating a truly grassroots movement–achieved solely by word of mouth with no outside promotion. Wolf makes a chilling case that American democracy is under grave threat. Investigating parallels between our current situation and the rise of dictators and fascism in other once-free societies, she uncovers a number of deeply unsettling similarities–from the use of paramilitary groups and secret prisons to the targeted suspension of the rule of law. With this galvanizing call to arms based on her recent book, she urges regular citizens to take back our legacy of freedom and justice.

Religulous Movie News

Movie News

‘Religulous’ is informative yet hilarious
13 November 2008: Bill Maher’s documentary “Religulous” is an overview of the current problems in world religions. Maher interviews many representatives of different religions throughout the film while exercising his snide sense of humor freely, making “Religulous” very entertaining.

Maher would get his point across better if “Religulous” were more focused. Maher does not focus on any one thing at length. The film jumps all over the place; this is distracting and prevents Maher from getting his point across as effectively as possible.

Film exposes religion’s ‘ridiculous nature’
13 November 2008: I recently saw Bill Maher’s movie, Religulous, and was impressed to finally discover a movie that depicts the way I feel about religion.

I attended on opening night and was pleasantly surprised to see how full the theatre was and how responsive the audience turned out to be.

At the end of the showing the audience applauded, something we don’t often see after any movie.

REEL CRITIC: Film will offend, but it’s funny
12 November 2008: Atheists and agnostics, your prayers are answered with the release of “Religulous,” a comedy disguised as a documentary and hosted by your spiritual leader, Bill Maher.

This low-budget new release is offensive, insightful and controversial. It’s also the funniest movie I’ve ever seen on the polarizing subject of religion.

Larry Charles, the director of “Borat,” is back with a vengeance, and this time the high priest of comedy is making fun of Christians, Jews, Muslims and anybody else stupid enough to be interviewed by his guerrilla filmmaking crew as they go on a comedy pilgrimage across the globe visiting holy sites and sacred areas.

Can Maher convince his entertainment congregation that religion is a myth, and that the whole world has gone crazy? What happens when a Jewish cameraman gets discovered at an Islamic shrine? Should you add to Maher’s collection plate or save your charity for something a little less divisive and mainstream? I’m no preacher, but from my bully pulpit, I highly recommend making a donation to your local theater to get the answers to these questions.

Eastburg’s indie-movie theater debuts cash-poor but optimistic
12 November 2008: The Pocono Community Theater — formerly the Pocono Cinema and Grand Cinema — opens tonight showing three art house movies and preparing to host a slew of community activities.

The now nonprofit theater plans not only movies, but an art gallery, a refurbished concession stand and more community involvement.

But already, the theater could be in trouble. When board members announced plans in August to reopen the theater after the Pocono Cinema closed there in April, they said they hoped to raise $100,000. That figure would allow them to open the theater and operate in the black for the first few months.

‘Religulous’ deserved a showing in Visalia
5 November 2008: In the interest of fairness and exposing ourselves to both sides of the argument, I have to admit I was surprised to see no theater in Visalia showing Bill Maher’s “Religulous” movie. However controversial the subject matter may be to some, the fact is that the local theaters were more than willing to show Ben Stein’s movie, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.”

It’s disappointing that one view was allowed so much exposure in Visalia while its counterpoint was not even allowed to show.

I realize that most of the people in our town are Christians and that any view that opposes these beliefs is not welcome. I also know that when people don’t expose themselves to different viewpoints they become complacent and uninformed.
