Get Smart Movie Full Synopsis

Maxwell Smart (Steve Carrel) is an analyst with a top secret American intelligence agency CONTROL. He is very hard working and is one of their best analysts but he aspires to become a field agent like his idol, Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson). He tries everything, even loses weight, to be promoted as a field agent. Despite getting good score in acceptance test, promotion eludes him as the Chief of Control (Alan Arkin) considers him too good an analyst to be lost to field work. He is very disappointed but tries to accept the fact that he would remain an analyst all his life. But life has other plans for him.

CONTROL headquarters is attacked by their archenemy KAOS, a terrorist outfit led by Siegfried (Terence Stamp). KAOS is able to hack into their system and identities of all CONTROL’s agents are exposed and they are systematically killed. Sudden shortage of field agents leads to Smart’s promotion and he is made Agent 86. He is partnered with Agent 99 (Anna Hathaway) whose recent plastic surgery to change her looks proves useful in concealing her identity. But, she openly objects to be partnered with somebody as inexperienced as Smart. Other field operatives like Agent 23 are given desk jobs.

Smart and 99 fly to Russia, as a couple, on a mission to find out how KAOS is getting nuclear weapons. During their flight, they are followed by Dalip Singh (Khalli), a KAOS operator. While trying to remove chewing gum stuck to the sole of his shoe with the aid of a matchstick, Smart is apprehended by the flight marshal who thinks he is trying to blow a bomb. Smart goes to the washroom and tries to remove the tape binding his hands with the help of a Swiss knife. Little harpoons fly out of it to get stuck everywhere except where they are aimed. Finally, a little harpoon cuts the tape before hitting the ejection button and Smart is ejected out of the plane, sans parachute. Agent 99 gets suspicious by his long absence and follows him to the washroom to find 2 parachutes bags intact but Smart missing. She immediately deduces what could have happened and follows him after donning parachute.

Agent 99 manages to reach Smart but before they could land safely, Dalip Singh catches up with them and rips their chute with a knife. Not to be out done, Agent 99 rips his chute as well. He holds on to Smart and 99 while all of them free fall. Suddenly, 99 turns and kisses Dalip on the mouth who gets so startled that he lets go and falls with a great force in a pig pen.

Smart and Agent 99 manage to land safely. As they proceed in their mission, Smart slowly demonstrates to 99 that despite his gaucheness and inexperience, he is not a bad field agent. He also gradually reveals his feelings for her, which are appreciated and returned by 99. But she is reluctant to have a relationship with any agent because her relationship with her previous partner (later revealed to be 23) resulted in blowing up of mission and compromising on her identity. She had a choice between opting for a desk job and going for plastic surgery. She opted for the second.

They manage to infiltrate KAOS’s Moscow nuclear weapons factory, run behind the façade of a bakery. Siegfried recognizes Smart who is posing as a buyer and orders his execution. But Smart not only manages to escape from his death but also with the help of 99, overpowers gunmen and plants explosives to bury nuclear weapons under debris. He even saves the life of Agent 99 along with his own by advising Dalip how to solve his marital problems using the information he had garnered during his analytical work. Later, Chief sends Agent 23 for clean up to Russia but he reports that there are no nuclear weapons to be found. Agency starts believing that Smart is a double agent and he is put under arrest.

Siegfried warns Vice President that KAOS has distributed nuclear weapons to unstable dictators and unless American Government pays him $20 billion, he is going to supply them with activation code. But his threat is not taken seriously at all. To establish the credibility of his threat, he decides to blow Los Angeles up during President’s visit. When Vice President refuses to believe CONTROL that KAOS is a serious threat, Chief along with Agent 99 and Agent 23 go to visit President to convince him about the gravity of the threat, but to no avail. Dalip sends a tip off regarding bomb to Smart via a radio call-in- show. Smart manages to escape from the police custody and before leaving headquarters, equips himself with a number of vintage items including a suit, car, and a shoe phone. He travels to Los Angeles to meet the Chief personally and tell him about the bomb. Agent 23 refuses to believe that Smart is innocent even when Chief and 99 are convinced of his innocence. A small instrument strapped on the wrist of Smart beeps on detecting radio active traces on Agent 23. It does not take more than a moment for Smart to deduce that 23 walked through the Moscow Nuclear Facility but did not report it because he is the one who is a double agent.

On seeing that his cover is blown up, 23 takes 99 his hostage and escape with the remote detonator of bomb. Chief and Smart chase him in a helicopter. He ties 99’s hands together and handcuffs her in the car. Smart manages to get into the car after putting his life in great danger. A serious fight ensues and their car catches fire when 99 tries to free herself using Smart’s Swiss knife. Smart is reminded of 99’s kiss to Dalip so, as a last resort, he starts kissing Agent 23 who gets so surprised that he loses his balance. Smart kicks him into the now flaming, track-led government GMC Yukon. Smart saves the life of 99 by pushing her off the burning car while he tries to detangle his foot from the ropes of a banner attached to the car. Agent 99 looks up to see car being destroyed by a speeding train and assumes that Smart has died. Extremely upsets, she breaks down and exclaims aloud that she wished they had more time together, an answer to a question Max had asked her earlier. Smart, who is standing behind her surprises her by saying he “missed it by that much.” 99 rushes over to him and kisses him.

Soon, these two, along with Chief, realize that the bomb hidden in Walt Disney Concert Hall, where the President is present for the concert, is going to be detonated when the orchestra plays final notes of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”. They race towards the hall and manage to reach just in time for Smart to tackle the conductor to stop the orchestra. However, everyone doubts the existence of bomb and guards mock Smart. But he proves to be correct in his assumption that bomb should be under the piano. Siegfried, during his escape, insults Dalip once too often and unable to take it any more Dalip throws him out of the car into a river.

There is a party at CONTROL headquarter to celebrate the success of the mission. President is very impressed by the performance of agency especially, by Maxwell Smart. Smart and Agent 99 start dating and get a pup named Fang. In the last scene of the movie, Smart and 99 are seen leaving headquarter through a set of high security doors. The last door won’t close and Smart tries to repair it using his Swiss knife causing the door to close on him as a little harpoon sticks in his cheek.
