Synopsis

Carrying on the legacy of its namesake killer, Jigsaw, despite his demise in Saw III, Saw V’s primary concern is to introduce the man who would carry on the bloody work of Jigsaw. There are not as many macabre murders and blood shed as some of the previous installments, yet the twists and unexpected turns of the story are as intriguing as ever. The movie opens to a man strapped on a table with a pendulum blade swinging over his stomach. He has just a minute to thrust his hands in a contraption which will crush his hands to stop the blade. When the trap malfunctions, resulting in the man getting sawed into two, it becomes apparent that it is not the work of meticulous Jigsaw. FBI Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) suspects Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) to be somehow involved in the killings and in the course of his investigation, wakes up from unconsciousness to find himself wearing a glass helmet which starts filling with water. He, somehow, gets rid of that helmet with minimum self-mutilation and continues to investigate his hunch. Jigsaw’s ex-wife Jill receives a video-tape and a mysterious box from his lawyer which makes her bolt from there without revealing anything about the contents of the box. Soon thereafter, a new group of five completely unrelated people wake up in sewer to face a series of brutal tasks. The million dollar questions are if all of them would be able to get out of Jigsaw’s lair alive and where would Strahm’s investigation lead him?

Saw V is a pretty decent film in its own right and it would be grossly unfair to compare it with the previous installments. Though, the premise of all movies in this series in similar yet it is quite commendable that they continue to churn out sequel after sequel even after Jigsaw has been bumped off in Saw III. But honestly, without him and his meticulous traps and death games, the Saw series is just not the same. The creators tried to make Jigsaw a part of this one by using flashbacks but their efforts were wasted. I liked this one more than last two installments because it is less grisly and is more about the plot twists and psychological thrills. One thing that’s beyond my comprehension is why the tagline of the movie is- You won’t believe how it ends. As far as I could see, ending was nothing unbelievable or unpredictable. Bad guys have won five times and I sincerely hope that they all die in Saw VI. Please, let the good guys win in the next one.
