Synopsis

An insightful and immensely enjoyable ‘Horton Hears a Who’ revolves around a highly imaginative and eccentric elephant, Horton (Jim Carry). Once, while splashing in cool waters of pool to beat the heat of Jungle Nool, Horton hears a feeble cry of help coming from the speck of dust drifting in the air. Unbeknown to Horton, the speck of dust houses the whole city of microscopic Whos, known as Who-Ville led by the Mayor (Steve Carell). Horton protects Whos by placing the speck on a clove and agrees to put it on a safe place despite being tormented and scorned by his neighbors who believe that he has lost his mind. His philosophy is simple and yet profound that a person’s a person, no matter how small. He explains to his skeptical friends “If you were way out in space, and you looked down at where we live, we would look like a speck.” Overcoming many obstacles in the way of fulfilling his promise to save Who-Ville, Horton would finally manage to convince others in his group about the existence of Whos. The only question is if he would be able to do that in nick of time.

Movie reviews

Charming and funny, this animated allegory gets the child in all of us to think big thoughts about small things. I could never imagine that Seuss’s cartoons illustrations can be turned into such crisp and flawless animation. The massage of tolerance comes out loud and clear. What impressed me most was exploration of faith in things unseen which only got passing reference in book but enjoys significant screen time. Interaction between Horton and Mayor McDodd leaves viewers with the impression that faith is not reasonable but it makes one more loving and more responsible. Movie is original and funny to the extend that I almost forgot that it is base on Dr. Seuss book due to creativity of plot and depth lent to the characters. Even at the places where parts of book are implemented, it is cute and not at all forced. The best aspect of the movie is its humor, both its goofy jokes and funny moments at random. Characters of Horton and Mayor are goofy and lovable in their own way. The message in the movie was not corny at all but delivered subtly. The movie promotes imagination and creativity and advocates sticking to ones belief no matter what others say. No matter what is your age, you will laugh out aloud and enjoy this hilarious anime.
