Swing Vote - Movie News
25 September 2008: Not many present-day films advocate civic responsibility, so Joshua Stern’s fable deserves credit for its noble intentions.
Inevitably, it will be compared with Frank Capra’s classics Mr Smith Goes To Washington and Mr Deeds Goes To Town, but it’s no movie masterpiece - just a piece of solid, middle-of-the-road entertainment.
It boasts a couple of strong leading performances. Kevin Costner is usually at his best when portraying flawed working men with too much liking for the bottle, and here he follows in the tradition he set up in Bull Durham and Tin Cup.
25 September 2008: Swing Vote stars Kevin Costner as the bonehead recipient of 15 minutes of frenzied fame when he loses his job, passes out drunk and forgets to go to the polling station – upsetting his 12-year old daughter Molly (Madeleine Carroll) and potentially 50% of the United States’ populace.
Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore swing through Iowa to aid Obama
28 September 2008: That’s what scares me, that if we have another four years of what I call the same dance, a different partner, that’s not a dance I want to show up to,” Moore, an Emmy Award winner perhaps best-known for her role in the movie “Ghost,” said to a screaming crowd of more than 300 students at Grinnell College.
The Obama campaign is targeting college-age voters with the help of Hollywood celebrities.
Swing Vote - The Sunday Times review
27 September 2008: Kevin Costner plays Ernest “Bud” Johnson, a lovable loser, boozer and bad dad — but with a big heart — looked after by his precocious 12-year-old daughter, Molly (Madeline Carroll). Their lives are turned upside down when it is up to the politically apathetic Bud to cast the single vote that will decide who will be the next president of the United States. Costner is in fine form as the ordinary Joe faced with an extraordinary choice, and Carroll never grates. The film steers a careful path between sentimentality and cynicism, in what is an entertaining political fairy tale with the message that every vote counts.
Review: Swing Vote, and I’ve Loved You So Long
25 September 2008: David Gritten enjoys Kevin Costner’s latest film and an absorbing performance from Kristin Scott Thomas
Since Waterworld and The Postman, his two mediocre and absurdly expensive movies from the 1990s, Kevin Costner has been regarded sceptically by studio executives and critics alike. It’s a pity. As a leading man now working below the industry’s radar, he enjoys a richer career than many more successful actors.
